Overview

OMI – 御海 what we understand, we can protect

OMI, Ocean Monitoring Initiative, is a program for marine conservation in Japan with  the primary aim to collect data on marine diversity to document the evolution of Japan archipelago’s ecosystem.

Japan, the northernmost point for coral and tropical biodiversity, is rapidly changing. Its little known destinations host precious macros and megafauna, essential for environmental equilibrium.

By organizing conservation programs, OMI gathers marine enthusiasts & research divers, provides training on data collection methods and underwater good practices to record ocean’s status through diving and snorkeling. The data collected are to be used in partnership with NPOs, universities and researchers for publication purposes.

With dive practices respectful of the environment and non-invasive data collection methods, we explore the little known Japanese coasts and enjoy the local feel of what we like to call “the 3rd Japan”: Not the traditional nor the urban one, but the Japan of islands’ nature and ocean.

This summer, we will be focusing on the sperm whales censing program to primarily support the local NGO Amami Whales & Dolphins Association.

Data collection method

We follow the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GRCMN) guidelines for ocean monitoring. By joining us, you will take part, among others, in megafauna census, underwater surveys, coral health assessment and water quality recording. Visit our website for more details.

About the programs

Around the year, we focus on different locations for different goals. It is very important to us to conduct these different surveys respecting both the ocean and the people.

This is why we will be more than happy to welcome you if you already are a certified diver, have awareness of good underwater practice (buoyancy, correct fins placement, fauna respect) and have high interest in marine conservation. Although we will be mainly snorkeling, a certification is requested to ensure participants have the minimum confidence level in water.

Before arrival, materials with knowledge for data collection will be shared. It will provide insights on the coral and fish species you can encounter, the data collection methods and knowledge of the island you will be visiting.
