Field Research Opportunities: Rhino, Carnivore & Primate Conservation on Private Land

About WildComm Research Stations CIC

WildComm Research Stations CIC is an independent, not-for-profit conservation organisation dedicated to demonstrating that private land can play a vital role in safeguarding biodiversity. We establish and manage research stations on privately owned land in Southern Africa, creating new models for conservation outside traditional protected areas. By combining rigorous ecological research, long-term biodiversity monitoring, and practical training, WildComm supports landowners in protecting wildlife while generating sustainable, nature-based income. Our work bridges the gap between academic research and real-world conservation, providing opportunities for participants to get involved in day-to-day fieldwork, data collection, and research activities, gaining practical experience while contributing to ongoing conservation efforts on the ground.

Academic & Professional Development

  • Our research projects are designed for students, graduates, and early-career professionals seeking practical experience in conservation biology, ecology, and wildlife management.
  • All projects are grounded in robust scientific methodology, with data contributing to peer-reviewed research, conservation policy, and open-access biodiversity databases.

Current Research Projects

  1. Rhino Conservation
  • Monitoring behaviour, movement patterns, and habitat use of endangered white rhino.
  • Supporting anti-poaching initiatives and contributing to long-term management strategies.
  1. Carnivore Monitoring
  • Field-based studies of carnivores using camera traps.
  • Research fills critical knowledge gaps on smaller carnivore species, informing future conservation strategies.
  1. Primate Research
  • Behavioural studies of baboons, and vervet monkeys.
  • Data supports conflict mitigation strategies.

Location and Accommodation

WildComm’s research stations are located in ecologically diverse regions of southern Africa, encompassing a range of habitats such as savannas, bushveld, forests, and wetlands. Accommodation is provided on-site in shared rooms with communal kitchen, dining, and relaxation areas. Facilities include flushing toilets, hot showers, and clean drinking water. Living conditions are practical and designed to support extended fieldwork, offering participants an immersive experience in remote, biodiverse landscapes.

Costs and Duration

By joining WildComm, your fees do more than cover accommodation and logistics. You are directly funding the protection of natural habitats. Your participation enables private landowners to generate income by conserving nature, rather than converting land for agriculture or development. In effect, your presence and research activity make it financially viable for landowners to keep wild spaces wild.

2026 fees: £700 per month

2027 fees: £770 per month

Fees include:

  • Placement at a research station on a private reserve.
  • Supervision and mentorship by experienced conservation scientists.
  • Accommodation and WiFi.

A minimum commitment of three months is required for all participants. This duration is necessary to gain meaningful field experience, contribute effectively to research, and understand the complexities of conservation work. Shorter stays are generally not suitable, as they do not allow for adequate training or integration into ongoing projects. In exceptional cases, a reduced duration may be considered, but program fees will be higher to reflect the additional resources required for short-term placements.

Who Should Apply?

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate students in conservation, ecology, zoology, or related fields.
  • Recent graduates and early-career professionals seeking field experience and research skills.
  • Individuals committed to evidence-based conservation and willing to work in remote, challenging environments.
