Animal Department Interns

The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is offering an animal department internship designed to provide practical, on‐the‐job experience and exposure to zoo operations and careers. Interns work under the supervision of permanent, full‐time zoo employees and are assigned a mentor from the department.

Internship Blocks & Deadlines

  • May-August: Application packet due by March 1
  • September-December: Application packet due by July 1
  • January-May: Application packet due by November 1

Blocks may be flexible depending on student needs.

Program Details

  • Internship term is generally 12-14 weeks (minimum 12 hours per week) or 4 weeks (minimum 40 hours per week)
  • Interns are required to keep a journal and complete a management project
  • Flexible scheduling may include weekends and holidays to accommodate academic requirements
  • Opportunities may be available for course credit through your school advisor

Application Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 19 years old
  • Maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5
  • Submit written results of a negative intradermal tuberculosis test from within the last year
  • Provide verification of an up-to-date tetanus vaccination
  • Include a complete application packet with a standard application form, a letter outlining career goals and internship expectations, a resume, and two letters of recommendation
