Description

Douglas Island Pink and Chum, Inc. is a private nonprofit organization operating salmon hatcheries in the Juneau area to enhance commercial and sport fisheries in northern Southeast Alaska. Macaulay Salmon Hatchery produces chum, Chinook, and coho salmon, while Snettisham Salmon Hatchery produces sockeye salmon for regional fisheries programs. The organization also operates a visitor center serving thousands annually.

The Fish Technician assists permanent hatchery staff with fish culture operations, supporting salmon production and enhancement programs. This seasonal role includes hands-on hatchery work in outdoor and facility settings and provides housing for non-Juneau residents.

Responsibilities

• Feed and sample fish in rearing containers
• Clean and maintain rearing containers and hatchery equipment
• Assist with broodstock collection
• Maintain and monitor incubators
• Process adult salmon during spawning operations
• Support general hatchery operations as directed by permanent staff

Minimum Requirements

• Some undergraduate coursework in natural resources, aquaculture, wildlife management, or related field
• At least one year of relevant experience
• Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds over 100 yards repeatedly
• Ability to work in exposed and inclement weather conditions
• Positive attitude and ability to work in cold and dark conditions
• Ability to work at least 40 hours per week

Preferred Qualifications

• Valid driver’s license with good driving record
