Junior Conservation Technician

We are excited to offer a new program for teens to join our Junior Conservation Technician Program. This is a paid program that is designed to hire individuals who are looking to gain a deeper understanding of conservation and want to gain first-hand experience working in the field. This program will meet 17 times starting in February through July 1 and will be all based at the Green Mountain Audubon Center in Huntington, VT. 

Essential Functions

We are seeking teens interested in learning about conservation and participating first-hand in projects that help birds and other wildlife. Does banding birds, studying bird friendly forestry practices, helping with trail projects and native plant gardens, and spending time outside throughout all of Vermont’s amazing seasons sound good to you?! Then apply to be on the team of our first ever Audubon Vermont Junior Conservation Technicians (JCT)! You’ll learn from and work alongside real Vermont conservation heroes!

We are looking for people with interests in:

  • Outdoor/environmental education
  • Wildlife and habitat conservation
  • Nature awareness, animal tracking, and wilderness living skills
  • Teaching and mentoring younger kids
  • Building teamwork and leadership skills

 What you will learn and work on:

  • JCT will work alongside of Audubon Vermont’s forester to establish and assess forestry plots through the center.
  • They will learn the skills of tree identification and dig into bird friendly forestry and sugaring management strategies.
  • They will have the opportunity to learn about Important Bird Areas and aid biologist in banding birds at the Green Mountain Audubon Center and will learn about recapture studies.
  • JCTs will form a team and learn professional skills like resume building and how to work on a team.
  • They will learn how to identify invasive species and remove them to enhance bird habitat.
  • They will have the opportunities to teach about bird friendly forestry and sugaring at Audubon Vermont’s open sugar house.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Interest in learning about more of the conservation and wildlife.
  • Participants must be able to commit to the following schedule:
    • February break dates: February 23rd, 24th, and 25th
    • April break dates: April 20th, 21st, and 22nd
    • March 26th and 27th - Sugar on Snow during Vermont Maple Sugar Association Open House Weekend
    • May 14th
    • June 4th, 21-24th and 27th – July 1st
