Description
National Taiwan Ocean University hosts a transdisciplinary research initiative focused on biodiversity and conflict in marine environments. The PaCE project examines how peacebuilding approaches can support conservation and improve livelihoods in disputed regions such as the South China Sea and West Philippine Sea.
This position contributes to socio-ecosystem research within an international consortium spanning Taiwan, Germany, and the Netherlands. The role combines quantitative and qualitative research to analyze biodiversity, trade networks, and governance dynamics in contested marine systems.
Responsibilities
- Conduct socio-ecosystem analysis within the PaCE project framework
- Identify telecoupled systems affecting biodiversity in the South China Sea and West Philippine Sea
- Evaluate trade networks of marine organisms and assess temporal changes
- Contribute to stakeholder workshops supporting science diplomacy and conservation
- Support fieldwork activities in Taiwan, including interviews and surveys
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams across multiple countries
- Participate in annual project meetings and consortium activities
- Develop additional research topics related to biodiversity and conflict dynamics
- Produce research outputs including reports and publications
Minimum Requirements
- PhD in natural resource economics, human geography, environmental science, marine social science, sustainability science, development studies, or related field
- Quantitative research skills in trade analysis
- Experience with qualitative research methods
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to collaborate across disciplines and international teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using mixed methods research approaches
- Fluency in Mandarin
- Strong reading and writing skills in Traditional Chinese
Additional Notes
- Location: Keelung, Taiwan
- Contract: Full-time, renewable annually up to 36 months
- Hybrid work arrangement possible with requirement to be based in Taiwan
- Participation in international meetings in Taiwan, Germany, and the Netherlands required
- Start date: April 1 (negotiable), no later than September 30
