Webinar | Conservation Leadership Programme 2023 Team Awards
Would you like to receive a grant to support your conservation projects as well as gain opportunities to build connections with peers, access expert mentorship and participate in training courses?
The Conservation Leadership Programme (CLP) – a 35 year-old capacity-building partnership between BirdLife International, Fauna & Flora International and the Wildlife Conservation Society – will be accepting applications to its 2023 Team Awards from July – October 2022.
These awards direct project funding and other support to early-career conservationists, mainly from developing countries, who are leading critical conservation projects worldwide. Many past award recipients (CLP alumni) have gone on to lead successful careers in conservation and achieved vital breakthroughs in protecting threatened biodiversity and habitats.

Meet our guest speakers
Kumar Paudel (Nepal)
Kumar is a conservation scholar-practitioner working to save plants and wildlife threatened by unsustainable harvesting and illegal trade in Nepal. He is co-founder & Director of a science-driven conservation non-profit organisation called Greenhood Nepal. He received a CLP Future Conservationist Award in 2018 and a CLP Follow-Up Award in 2022 to support his work conserving wild populations of Maire’s yew, a tree with cancer-treating properties that’s being decimated by unsustainable and illegal harvesting.
Martin Mwangi (Kenya)
Martin is a conservation scientist with 12 years’ experience. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Community Resources Management and a Master’s Degree in Environmental Sciences. His expertise is in avian research and conservation, grassland and forest rehabilitation, and community engagement for behavioural change. He is currently a program coordinator at the NGO, Friends of Kinangop Plateau, which has secured numerous grants including a CLP Future Conservationist Award in 2020.
Martin is passionate about wildlife and works as a lead tour guide in east Africa specialising in rare and endemic birds. He has previously worked for the World Wide Fund for Nature-Kenya and Intercontinental Consultants and Technocrats Limited.
Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz (Bolivia)
Paola is a Bolivian biologist working with neotropical felids ranging from the big jaguar (Panthera onca) to the small oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus). Her work focuses on leading conservation actions such as promoting behaviour change, fostering coexistence between human activities and felids (dealing with conflicts), and also using genetics as a tool to improve conservation efforts. She is particularly interested in the exchange of knowledge between conservationists from different backgrounds.
One of her ultimate goals in life is to be a leader in wild felids conservation. Paola received a CLP Future Conservationist Award in 2020.
Gabriela de Luna (Colombia)
CLP alumna Gabriela de Luna recently received a 2022 CLP Follow-up Award. Gabriela is a Doctor of Biology passionate about promoting research and conservation in Colombia. She co-founded an NGO called Fundación Proyecto Primates over ten years ago and, together with the Proyecto Primates team, she leads a conservation project focused on protecting the Critically Endangered brown spider monkey, including initiatives in community conservation, conservation research projects and environmental education.
