Badger Ecology and Surveying

Badgers are frequently encountered on development sites so it is important that ecologists know how to survey for them, how to recognise their field signs and have a good understanding of their ecology.

Course Description:

This introductory level course will be part classroom and part field based and is taught by an experienced Principal Ecologist from Ecology Training UK via videos.

  • Rural and urban badger ecology
  • Identification of field signs
  • Surveying for badgers
  • Legislation

During the course your tutor will take you out to visit a badger sett to help you identify field signs.

Course Format:

This course is delivered on videos presented by Principal Ecologist, Sue Searle, BSc, PGDip, MCIEEM. It is the same content as our one-day Badger Ecology and Surveying course.

Video 1 covers badger ecology, field signs, sett types, survey techniques, data collection and legislation with a brief overview of Bovine TB and badgers. Playing time 1hr 18 mins.

Video 2 – Sue takes you out into the field and shows you badger signs and setts. She also shows you how to put out a trail cam and there is some footage of badgers from the trail cam taken at the sett. Playing time 18 mins.

Beaver Ecology and Surveying

Beavers are living in various parts of the UK now and they are transforming rivers. This biodiversity champion is on its way to becoming widely accepted as a British wildlife species. Now is the time to find out more about them as beaver experts will be needed across the country. They have already gained protected species status in Scotland and it is only a matter of time before they are protected in England and Wales.

This is our one-day beaver course delivered online.

There are two videos in this course.

Dormouse Ecology and Surveying

This introductory course will greatly enhance your understanding of dormouse ecology and conservation and will provide you with a useful first step towards gaining your dormouse handling licence. Once you have completed the course, your trainer will be able to sign the appropriate sections of your Dormouse Training Log.

During the course we will cover:

  • Dormouse ID, ecology and conservation
  • Survey techniques
  • Nut and nest ID
  • Principles of handling, aging, sexing and weighing dormice
  • How to carry out a dormouse nest box check
  • How to set up a dormouse nest tube survey

What you will learn from our experienced tutor will give you the knowledge to be able to work towards your licence, manage habitats appropriately or just learn more about these endearing creatures.

This a comprehensive course with a lot of content. Allow time to stop the videos frequently to make notes and do further reading as directed.

Allow 4-5 hours to complete this course.

Mammal ID

Learn how to identify UK mammals

This online short course is designed to take you through how to identify UK mammals (excluding bats). It covers physical appearance and ID features, feeding signs, footprints, burrows and droppings. Thirty-six mammals are covered including all the common and rare species from deer and wild boar to the small mammals.

Guidance on further reading is given.

The course comprises of 3 modules which are viewed online. You will be sent the links to all three modules and the quiz in a single e-mail. This will be sent to you when you book onto the course so you can start at any time.

Course format: The course is in the form of slides containing text, illustrations and photographs. At the end there will be a short photographic quiz where you can test your new skills. You will send your answers via email to be marked. On completion you will be issued with a certificate of attendance.

Time commitment: This 3 module short course is expected to take around 4-5 hours to complete. There is no specific time limit for completing the course, but you will not receive a certificate until you have submitted your quiz answers.

Learning outcomes: By the end of the course you will be able to identify 36 species of UK mammals including their physical appearance, their tracks, feeding signs and burrows (where appropriate).

Otter Ecology and Surveying

Otters may be encountered on development sites that affect or are near to water courses and they may also be present on sites designated for nature conservation. Therefore it is important that ecologists and conservationists know how to survey for them, how to recognise their field signs and have a good understanding of their ecology.

This course is an introductory level self-study course that combines a ‘classroom’ session with your tutor to learn about ecology, identification, field signs and legislation then you will experience going out on a survey with the tutor on a video. The course is taught by an experienced ecologist from Ecology Training UK Ltd and is based on our Otter Ecology and Surveying field course.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Otter biology and ecology
  • Identifying otters and their field signs
  • Legal status of otters
  • Otter conservation
