Description
The Colorado Plateau Seed Collection Coordinator supports large-scale native seed collection efforts across Department of Interior lands in the Southwest. Working with the Great Basin Institute and National Park Service, this role coordinates crews and implements the Seeds of Success program across multiple states and ecosystems.
The position combines field leadership, data management, and collaboration with federal and partner organizations. It focuses on ensuring high-quality seed collection, accurate data reporting, and effective coordination across multiple crews operating in diverse and remote environments.
Responsibilities
- Lead planning and implementation of seed collection across multiple ecoregions
- Establish and manage up to eight field crews including scheduling, hiring, and training
- Supervise crews and ensure compliance with seed collection and data protocols
- Coordinate with federal partners to develop annual target species lists
- Develop and maintain project work plans
- Communicate with partners and funders to support project objectives
- Prepare and submit seed collection permits
- Conduct field scouting and lead native seed collection efforts
- Collect plant voucher specimens following established protocols
- Ensure safe seed handling and shipment to designated facilities
- Document seed collection activities and maintain accurate records
- Implement quality assurance and quality control measures for data accuracy
- Maintain paper and digital records including inventory and testing data
- Prepare reports summarizing fieldwork and results
- Support training, professional development, and infrastructure projects
- Travel extensively and conduct overnight fieldwork as required
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in botany, ecology, natural resources, or related field
- At least one year of seed collection experience
- Experience planning and coordinating field logistics
- Strong plant identification skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and ArcGIS
- Experience with ESRI mobile applications such as Survey123 and Field Maps
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work long hours in adverse outdoor conditions
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a 4WD vehicle
- Ability to pass a DOI background check
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Seeds of Success program
- Familiarity with Colorado Plateau plant communities
- Experience using GPS, mapping tools, and navigation applications
Additional Notes
- Seasonal full-time position with a 9-month term starting April 6, 2026
- Duty locations may include Flagstaff, Arizona; Moab, Utah; or Grand Junction, Colorado
- Frequent travel required, including overnight trips and camping
- Fieldwork includes operating 4×4 vehicles and working in remote environments
