<strong>journalists from developing countries to cover the environment more effectively<\/strong>. We are now a truly global network working with reporters and media outlets in virtually every region of the world. In our mission to improve the quantity and quality of environmental reporting, <strong>EJN trains journalists to cover a wide variety of issues<\/strong>, <strong>develops innovative online environmental news sites and produces content for local media<\/strong> \u2013 including ground-breaking investigative reports. We also <strong>establish networks of environmental journalists in countries where they don&#8217;t exist and build their capacity where they do<\/strong>. We do so through workshops and the development of training materials and by offering Fellowship programs, grants to media organizations, story stipends, and support for story production and distribution. That\u2019s where EJN comes in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Education and Capacity-Building<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since we launched in 2004, <strong>EJN has trained<\/strong> more than 14,000 journalists from dozens of countries <strong>on a wide variety of environmental issues, including<\/strong> climate change, biodiversity, forests, water, environmental health, oceans, fisheries and coastal resources. We have also<strong> provided more than 500 Fellowships<\/strong> so that individual journalists can attend and report on important conferences, summits and convenings, including the UN Climate and Biodiversity COPs, the World Conservation Congress, the World Water Forum and many others. These opportunities allow journalists from developing countries to attend and report on negotiations they might otherwise not have access to for their audiences back home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Network Creation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our network <strong>connects thousands of journalists from around the world<\/strong> with an interest in covering issues related to the environment and climate change. We now have more than 14,000 journalist members registered on our website from more than 180 countries, and thousands of additional followers on social media. We also moderate email listservs connecting more than 2,000 journalists. In addition, we help establish local networks of environmental journalists or collaborate with existing ones. These networks then become our active partners, working with local journalists in local languages, and in most cases are self-sustaining institutions that can provide their members with reporting resources and training programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Story Production<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a direct result of our activities, these journalists \u2013 working in print, radio, TV and online \u2013 have produced roughly <strong>12,800 stories<\/strong>, not to mention all the environmental coverage they go on to produce afterwards. Many of these stories have resulted from the hundreds of grants we\u2019ve given out to support original reporting on topics that don\u2019t otherwise receive much coverage. This now includes an increasing number of ground-breaking investigative stories.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/new.earthjournalism.net\/stories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Visit our Stories page<\/a>\u00a0to read them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GeoJournalism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>EJN also supports the production of other types of content and is a <strong>pioneer of GeoJournalism<\/strong>, online platforms that visualize environmental and Earth Science data, generate custom maps and display stories in a variety of formats. We\u2019ve so far supported the creation of 10 regionally based environmental news platforms, most of which seek to combine journalists\u2019 stories with map-based visualized data, giving narrative storytelling important scientific context. We have several projects that focus on global issues, such as climate change, biodiversity, and the oceans, as well as projects that are centered on specific regions facing severe threats to their environment.\u00a0One current\u00a0example\u00a0is in the Amazon, where\u00a0EJN is working with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.infoamazonia.org\/\">InfoAmazonia<\/a>\u00a0to carry out an investigative reporting project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthjournalism.net\/projects\/climate-change-media-partnership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Climate Change Media Partnership<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Through this program, EJN has <strong>sent reporting Fellows<\/strong>, mostly from the developing world, <strong>to the<\/strong> <strong>UN Climate Summits<\/strong> (COPs) almost every year since 2007. We typically do so in partnership with other organizations: the CCMP was founded in collaboration with Panos and the International Institute for Environment and Development. More recently, we\u2019ve partnered with the Stanley Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthjournalism.net\/projects\/biodiversity-media-initiative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Biodiversity Media Initiative<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up to one million plant and animal species are now threatened with extinction, according to the latest UN report from a panel of biodiversity experts. The loss of these species will certainly have knock-on effects for humanity, particularly for people who live closest to nature. This initiative is aimed at exposing the threats and impacts by strengthening reporting on biodiversity and conservation. Our coverage to date comes from dozens of countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Georgia, Kenya, Papua New Guinea, and many others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthjournalism.net\/projects\/ocean-media-initiative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Ocean Media Initiative<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The health of the world\u2019s oceans and related issues, such as the sustainable management of fisheries and coral reefs, are a global challenge. But in keeping with our support for local media, many of our projects have focused on specific countries or geographies, among them: Indonesia, China, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and West Africa. Several of our projects also range in duration, from a few months to a few years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthjournalism.net\/projects\/earth-journalism-network-asia-pacific-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>EJN Asia-Pacific<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A four-year project that kicked off in late 2017 with a focus on boosting media coverage of environmental and natural resources issues in Asia and the Pacific, ensuring greater access to such news by at-risk communities and amplifying the voices of women, indigenous groups and other marginalized groups. In addition to our regular activities, such as workshops and story funding, we work closely with local media, universities, journalist networks and research organizations to build capacity in socio-environmental reporting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthjournalism.net\/projects\/bay-of-bengal-climate-resiliency-initiative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bay<\/strong><strong>\u00a0of Bengal<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With a goal of <strong>boosting climate justice and resilience<\/strong> around the Bay of Bengal, this project deepens EJN\u2019s commitment to the region by strengthening existing ties and forging new partnerships with journalists and media outlets in eastern India and Bangladesh. In addition to holding journalism training workshops on resilience topics and providing yearly grants to individual reporters and media-focused organizations, EJN has carried out a media landscape assessment and held focus groups with local communities to identify information needs and gaps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/earthjournalism.net\/projects\/investigating-wildlife-trafficking\"><strong>Investigating Wildlife Trafficking\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This project aids journalists in <strong>monitoring and investigating illegal wildlife trafficking<\/strong>, a trade estimated at more than US$20 billion annually. Through investigations led by cross-border teams of journalists, we aim to expose these smuggling networks, identify gaps in law enforcement and highlight the impact this type of criminal activity has on society. Our partner in this effort is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oxpeckers.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oxpeckers<\/a>\u00a0Investigative Environmental Journalism, a South Africa-based organization that hosts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oxpeckers.org\/wildeyemap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#WildEye<\/a>, a digital GeoJournalism tool that maps and tracks data\u00a0on legal interventions against wildlife trafficking across Asia and Europe. We currently\u00a0support\u00a0investigations in East Africa, the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/earthjournalism.net\/projects\/east-africa-wildlife-journalism\">East Africa Wildlife Journalism<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This two-year project focuses on <strong>improving media coverage of conservation issues<\/strong>, including wildlife trafficking and human-wildlife conflicts in East Africa. It does so\u00a0through workshops that build reporting skills, story grants, stipends to support investigative reporting and roundtables for journalists working on investigative features.\u00a0We&#8217;re also\u00a0working to identify journalists who can investigate and uncover wildlife trafficking networks in the region \u2013 including financial flows, trafficking routes and corruption helping feed the trade.\u00a0Our aim is to raise awareness about an increasingly critical issue and give citizens, policy-makers and businesses an understanding of what\u2019s needed to protect the region\u2019s species and environment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthjournalism.net\/projects\/uc-berkeley-earth-journalism-scholars-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>UC Berkeley Earth Journalism Scholars<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since 2013, EJN has been partnering with the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism to support their education in environmental reporting. The collaboration centers around an annual class on Earth Journalism taught by EJN Executive Director James Fahn and co-lecturer March Schapiro. As of 2019, we\u2019ve trained around 100 graduate students, most of them from the US, but also from China, India, Mexico, Argentina, Mexico, Kenya, and Canada. The students each receive a travel grant to carry out an original reporting project, usually abroad, during spring break. A sampling of these stories, many of which end up being published or broadcast by commercial media outlets, can be found here.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"text-align-center\" style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Our work has been improving the environment and people&#8217;s lives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>EJN\u2019s goal in supporting improved coverage of environmental issues and climate change is to inform the public and policymakers about the challenges they pose and potential ways to address them.<\/p>\n<p>As journalists, we also strive to make sure those in power are held accountable, that communities \u2013 especially those which have been historically marginalized \u2013 are well-informed and can have their voices heard.\u00a0We track how people are responding to this information to gain a better sense of what stories, activities and topics are most useful, and how they influence public policies, behavior and debate.<\/p>\n<p>We know it\u2019s difficult to determine if and how a news story leads to real, sustained change, especially when it comes to policymaking.
