Description

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation manages natural resources and supports conservation efforts across the state. This position is part of the Bureau of Fisheries, contributing to field-based monitoring, habitat management, and public outreach.

The role focuses on fieldwork, data collection, and habitat improvement projects. The position supports fisheries programs through biological sampling, equipment management, and public education initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and perform field activities across multiple project areas
  • Collect fish, wildlife, and plant specimens for analysis
  • Summarize and manage data from surveys and sampling efforts
  • Supervise construction and repair of habitat structures
  • Conduct fish egg collection, reclamation, and liming activities
  • Operate boats, ATVs, and transport equipment to field sites
  • Work in small crews in remote and challenging environments
  • Assist with preparation of outreach materials and public presentations
  • Deliver fishing education programs and post access boundaries
  • Maintain, repair, and procure equipment
  • Perform intermediate GIS tasks
  • Supervise technicians, interns, and volunteers

Minimum Requirements

  • Three years of experience in fisheries, wildlife, or marine resource programs
  • Ability to work in remote areas and adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to hike and carry equipment over difficult terrain
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license or ability to meet transportation needs
  • Ability to operate motorized boats or obtain certification

  • Schedule: Full-time hours including weekends, holidays, and potential overtime
  • Appointment: Temporary position funded through March 31, 2027
  • Travel: Required, including possible overnight travel
