Douglas Island Pink and Chum, Inc. (DIPAC) is seeking Fish Technicians to support sockeye salmon production at the remote Snettisham Hatchery in Southeast Alaska. This entry-level, hands-on role offers a unique opportunity to live and work in the Tongass National Forest while contributing to Alaska’s sustainable fisheries.
Description
Snettisham Hatchery, one of the largest sockeye producers in North America, is operated by DIPAC for the benefit of Alaska’s common property fisheries. Fish Technicians assist with salmon culture operations such as feeding, broodstock collection, and maintenance of rearing systems. The role is labor-intensive and ideal for individuals eager to gain fisheries experience in a rugged and remote setting. Room, board, and access to wilderness adventures are provided on site.
Responsibilities
- Feed and sample juvenile salmon
- Assist with broodstock collection and adult processing
- Maintain rearing containers and incubators
- Perform general hatchery and facility maintenance
- Uphold disinfection and quality control protocols
- Participate in team cooking and shared living tasks
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Interest in aquaculture or fisheries
- Ability to pass a background check
- Physically fit and able to lift 50 lbs repeatedly
- Willingness to work in remote and rugged conditions
- Comfortable living in shared, dorm-style housing
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in hatchery or fisheries settings
- Demonstrated teamwork in remote or outdoor environments
- Positive attitude and adaptability
