Description

Cardinal Point Captains, Inc. provides vessel operations and technical support services for marine research and government programs. This seasonal position supports operations aboard the 83-foot Research Vessel Manta R-8301, which conducts research, education, and outreach missions for Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary offshore from Galveston, Texas.

The Galley Mate supports offshore missions lasting three to five days, assisting vessel crew and visiting scientists during the May through mid-October field season. The role includes preparing meals, maintaining the galley, supporting vessel operations, and helping ensure the vessel meets NOAA Small Boat Program safety and operational standards.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare meals for up to 14 people during offshore research missions lasting three to five days
  • Clean and maintain the galley area during vessel operations
  • Mobilize the vessel before each cruise by cleaning, stocking provisions, handling laundry, and preparing scientific equipment
  • Assist with vessel operations as needed during research missions
  • Perform routine vessel maintenance including boat checks, fueling, vessel logs, fluid changes, and cleaning
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and light repairs when required
  • Ensure vessel operations comply with NOAA Small Boat Program requirements
  • Assist with diving operations, including preparation of scuba dive compressors when required
  • Follow established NOAA safety procedures including NOAA Administrative Order 209-125 and the NOAA Small Boat Operations Manual
  • Maintain professional conduct while working with scientists, natural resource managers, and educators aboard the vessel

Minimum Requirements

  • At least one year of vessel deck management experience in offshore marine environments
  • Ability to perform galley duties including meal preparation and cleanup while at sea
  • Ability to deploy on overnight offshore trips lasting up to five days and operate up to 100 nautical miles from shore
  • Ability to adjust to schedule changes due to weather or operational needs
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and professionalism
  • Ability to work offshore without seasickness and assist guests experiencing motion sickness
  • Ability to collaborate with scientists, natural resource managers, and educators
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 75 pounds
  • Possess or obtain NOAA Component Course certification
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating scuba dive compressors including NITROX gas mixes

Additional Notes

  • Seasonal field season from May through mid-October with potential work before or after the primary season
  • Offshore missions typically last three to five days
  • Vessel home port is Galveston, Texas
  • Reports to the vessel Captain
