To further the study of history and design in the American garden and to look to the future of gardens and their unique place in our environment. History: The GCA Garden History and Design Committee had a particular interest in starting a scholarship to provide assistance at the graduate level toward study of American garden and landscape history and/or contemporary American garden and landscape design. After a meeting at which such a fellowship was proposed, Douglas Dockery Thomas came forward and said she and her husband, Wilmer, would be interested in funding it. Mrs. Thomas is a member of the Millbrook (New York) Garden Club and has long been interested in garden history and design as well as in land and nature conservancy.
