Description
The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks supports conservation and management of wildlife resources across the state. This position operates within the Fish and Wildlife Genomics Lab in partnership with the University of Montana, contributing to long-term genetic monitoring programs.
The role focuses on processing wildlife genetic samples, maintaining laboratory operations, and supporting data management. The position plays a key role in ensuring data quality, sample tracking, and timely processing to support conservation and research initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Process wildlife genetic samples including blood, tissue, hair, and scat using established protocols
- Develop and refine genetic and genomic laboratory methods
- Conduct genotyping, data quality control, and data summarization
- Maintain organization and curation of biological samples throughout processing
- Prepare samples and DNA extracts for shipment to external laboratories
- Update laboratory protocols, forms, and data submission systems
- Monitor lab capacity and ensure sample processing timelines are met
- Coordinate with field staff and partners to receive, log, and track sample shipments
- Maintain accurate records of sample metadata and laboratory results
- Enter genetic data into databases for reporting and analysis
- Sterilize and decontaminate laboratory equipment and workspaces
- Prepare reagents and maintain laboratory supplies and inventory
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment
- Support procurement of lab supplies and assist with budget coordination
- Assist with data analysis and preparation of reports
- Communicate sample status and results with internal and external partners
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in science or natural resource field
- At least one year of laboratory experience
- Knowledge of genetic or genomic laboratory methods
- Experience producing genotypic data
- Strong organizational and data management skills
- Ability to follow detailed protocols and maintain accurate records
- Proficiency with computer applications including spreadsheets and databases
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks in a lab setting
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with non-invasive genetic sampling methods
- Experience with population genomics or marker development
- Experience with coding or data analysis tools
- Technical writing experience
