Description

The Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy is a national nonprofit dedicated to conserving amphibians, reptiles, and their habitats through applied science, habitat restoration, and collaborative partnerships. ARC implements field programs in priority conservation areas to improve species survival across the United States.

The Herpetofauna Private Lands Biologist supports recovery of the federally Endangered Black Warrior waterdog and the federally Threatened Flattened Musk Turtle. Based in Alabama, this field-oriented role focuses on habitat restoration and conservation practice implementation on private working lands within the Black Warrior-Tombigbee basin, in coordination with federal agencies and conservation partners.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance to private landowners to assess resource concerns and develop conservation plans
  • Support enrollment of landowners in NRCS conservation programs such as EQIP
  • Coordinate with NRCS staff on contract development, practice design, implementation, and monitoring
  • Conduct outreach events, workshops, and technical trainings
  • Track project outcomes and contribute to reporting for partners and funders
  • Conduct occupancy surveys, eDNA sampling, trapping, and habitat assessments
  • Perform Stream Quantification Tool assessments and data analysis
  • Identify threats and prioritize restoration areas
  • Collaborate with partners on species recovery planning and regional coordination

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in wildlife biology, aquatic ecology, natural resource management, or related field
  • At least two years of experience working with landowners or agricultural producers
  • Familiarity with USDA NRCS conservation programs
  • Experience conducting aquatic or riparian biological fieldwork
  • Proficiency with GIS tools, Microsoft Office, and field data collection platforms
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Ability to travel frequently and work in remote field conditions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting herpetofauna monitoring in freshwater systems
  • Familiarity with conservation challenges of the Southern Appalachians or Cumberland Plateau
  • Experience with recovery planning for federally listed species
  • Background in restoration planning or conservation project tracking
