ABOUT THE CORAL REEF ALLIANCE

The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to save the world’s coral reefs. Working with people around the world—from fishermen to government leaders, divers to scientists, Californians to Fijians—CORAL protects our most valuable and threatened ecosystems. To achieve our mission, the Programs team oversees community-driven conservation work and cutting edge scientific research. We set an aggressive vision for growth and increased conservation action to address the serious threats affecting coral reef ecosystems and the human communities they support.

Position Description

The Program Manager (PM) is responsible for ensuring the success of one fully funded project in Oneata (Lau Group). The project involves implementation of a series of projects on Oneata that reduce fishing pressure on the local reefs, while providing the community with skills, income, and nutrition. The PM will manage and collaborate with an on-site Program Coordinator who is from Oneata, as well as work in partnership with community members and the Fijian government.

In partnership with CORAL’s Deputy Program Director (based in Oakland, CA), the PM will develop a work program designed to achieve specific conservation outcomes. The PM has primary responsibility for the daily implementation, management, and monitoring of this conservation project. The PM is expected to use excellent judgment in making decisions about program implementation, while seeking input from the Deputy Program Director when warranted. Specific duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Providing day-to-day management of a project, ensuring that project objectives and deliverables are completed on-time and within budget
  • Developing a work program and schedule, and tracking project budget and expenditures
  • Providing detailed and timely project status information sufficient for internal updates and reports to project funders
  • Providing guidance and direction to one Program Coordinator and various contractors
  • Coordinating and participating in community outreach events that advance project objectives
  • Leading the development of specific resources for advancing project objectives, including communications products and outreach materials
  • Assisting in administrative functions, as needed, and coordinating logistics for field site visits by HQ staff
  • Respecting community dynamics in a thoughtful, tactful, and diplomatic manner when communicating with community groups and individuals

Required Qualifications

The minimum required qualifications include BA/BS degree in biological, physical, or social science-related field and at least four years of demonstrated experience in marine conservation or resource management; a post-graduate degree (MS, PhD) is highly desirable. Additionally, the program manager must have:

  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills and the ability to accomplish complex assignments requiring cross-organizational cooperation
  • Resourcefulness and ability to work proactively; ability to complete tasks independently, efficiently, and in a timely manner
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals from a variety of disciplines, cultures and backgrounds
  • Familiarity with Fijian laws and customs
  • A proven track record of establishing and nurturing partnerships to achieve conservation outcomes
  • Flexibility and willingness to work in situations of flux; ability to work in a fast turn-around environment
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to take ownership for wide-ranging responsibilities while exhibiting utmost professionalism and discretion
  • Budget and financial tracking experience
  • Commitment to the CORAL’s mission

Working Conditions

The PM may work in variable weather conditions, at remote outdoor locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, coastal and marine environments and vessels, and under physically demanding circumstances that may require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain. Work conditions may require international and domestic travel including to remote island areas, the mainland U.S., neighboring and other islands or nations. Additionally, the work may be performed independently without day-to-day supervision and may require work during the evenings and on weekends.

Conditions of Employment

This is a one year, full-time contract position. This contract has a desired start date of July 1 2019, and end date of July 1, 2020.
