Most of your life is work – so it had better matter

I came across a simple but slightly unsettling visual recently.

It showed a human life laid out in weeks.

Every single week, from birth to old age, shown as a small square.

When you see it like that, a few things jump out immediately.

Childhood and education – long when you’re in it – actually take up a relatively small portion. Retirement, which we’re often told to plan our lives around, is even smaller and far from guaranteed.

What takes up the most space by far is our working life.

Decade after decade of weeks spent working, thinking about work, worrying about work, preparing for work, recovering from work.

Seeing it laid out like that made something feel very clear to me.

If most of our lives are spent working, then our careers are not a side issue. They are not just about paying the bills or “getting by”. They shape how we spend our time, how we use our energy, how we feel most days of the week, and often how we see ourselves.

And yet, so many people end up drifting through their careers.

Not because they don’t care.
Not because they lack motivation.

But because no one ever really teaches you how to navigate a career with intention.

I see this every day at Conservation Careers.

People who care deeply about nature and wildlife, but feel stuck. People who want their work to mean something, but feel unsure how to move forward. People who are busy, capable, and committed – yet unclear, under-confident, or overwhelmed when it comes to their next step.

The problem is rarely effort.

More often, it’s a lack of clarity, and a lack of a plan.

Careers don’t need to be perfect. They don’t need to be linear. But they do need direction. And they work best when they align with what matters to you, what you’re good at, what you enjoy doing, and the difference you want to make in the world.

That’s especially true in conservation, where the work is meaningful, but the pathways are rarely obvious.

That’s exactly what we’ll be focusing on in a live session this Monday at 7:30 p.m. UK time.

It’s a practical session on how to navigate your conservation career in 2026 – whether you’re trying to break in, switch direction, or move forward with more confidence and focus.

We’ll talk about:

  • Why so many conservation careers stall
  • How to get clearer on your direction without needing everything figured out
  • How to move forward with a realistic plan, rather than drifting week by week

If your career is going to take up most of your life, it deserves your attention.

You can click here to enrol for the live session on Monday at 7:30 p.m. UK time, and I’d love to have you there.
