Rewilding Our Careers: A Natural Path to Growth

In nature conservation, rewilding has shown us the power of letting ecosystems flourish naturally. At Conservation Careers, we’ve experienced a similar shift in how we guide career paths. Initially, we viewed careers as a linear process, much like traditional conservation targets: a series of steps leading to a specific goal. However, we’ve come to realize that careers, like ecosystems, thrive under the right conditions. Let me explain…

From Control to Conditions

In many conservation projects, traditional methods focus on clear, measurable targets—such as increasing the population of a specific species or restoring a set number of hectares. These approaches often follow a structured plan, with defined timelines, budgets, and interventions. While they can be effective in certain contexts, they sometimes overlook the complex, dynamic nature of ecosystems. We’re often trying to control the uncontrollable.

Rewilding, by contrast, embraces a less interventionist philosophy. Instead of trying to control outcomes, it seeks to restore natural processes and allow ecosystems to regenerate with minimal human interference. Success is measured not by rigid goals but by the return of natural functions and biodiversity. It’s about creating the right conditions—such as reintroducing keystone species, removing barriers, or allowing natural grazing—and trusting that nature will find its balance.

A great example is the Knepp Estate in England. Rather than following a rigid conservation plan, Knepp created the right habitat for nature to flourish. In 1999, only three singing male Turtle Doves were recorded; by 2021, that number rose to 20, thanks to 445 hectares of rewilded habitat. This success wasn’t about traditional intervention but about providing the right conditions for species to thrive—a hopeful reminder that nature, given the chance, can rebound swiftly.

The Career Rewilding Mindset

At Conservation Careers, we’ve undergone a similar mindset shift—moving away from the belief that careers are built by following rigid, step-by-step plans, toward the idea that they flourish when nurtured under the right conditions. Just as conservation has evolved from a target-driven approach to one that trusts in nature’s ability to restore itself when supported appropriately, we’ve realised that career success is less about ticking boxes and more about creating a fertile environment for growth.

This shift in thinking is fundamentally changing how we support conservationists on their paths. Just as nature rebounds when given space and the right ingredients, our professional lives thrive when we stop trying to force progress and instead nurture the ecosystem around us. This means stepping away from rigid career ladders or one-size-fits-all checklists and instead asking ourselves: What do I need to grow?

The answer might be different for everyone. For some, it could be gaining clarity of direction—understanding what truly drives them. For others, it might be building confidence by developing key skills, gaining practical experience, or connecting with a supportive community. Many benefit from mentorship, coaching, structured training, or simply having access to opportunities they hadn’t considered before.

At Conservation Careers, we’ve seen how transformational it can be when people feel empowered to explore, adapt, and chart their own course. A flexible, person-centred approach allows both aspiring and professional conservationists to grow their careers organically—at a pace that feels right, in a direction that feels meaningful, and with the tools they need to thrive.
