One of the biggest lessons we’ve learnt over the past 13 years running Conservation Careers is this:

Conservation careers are better together.

Whether you’re trying to land your first conservation job, change specialism, move into leadership, secure funding for further study, or simply become better at what you do, very few people get there alone.

The conservation sector has always struck us as one of the warmest, kindest, and most generous professional communities we’ve ever encountered. We’re connected by something much bigger than ourselves. We all care deeply about wildlife and the natural world, and that shared purpose makes it surprisingly easy to connect with complete strangers.

People often tell us they dislike the idea of networking. It can sound transactional, awkward, or even a little fake.

We’ve never really thought of it as networking.

We’ve always thought of it as making friends.

Over the years, we’ve interviewed more than 160 conservation professionals on the Conservation Careers Podcast, alongside publishing over 500 written career interviews. One thing still amazes us.

We honestly can’t remember anyone saying no.

Busy people. World-leading scientists. CEOs. Rangers. Campaigners. Students. Government advisers.

Time and again, people have generously shared their stories, lessons, mistakes, and advice simply because they wanted to help someone else along their own journey.

We find that incredibly humbling.

Perhaps that’s one of the things we love most about conservation.

People don’t just care about nature. They care about each other too.

Some of the biggest breakthroughs in our careers haven’t come from another qualification or another job application.

They’ve come from conversations.

A mentor sharing their experience.

A colleague introducing us to someone new.

A friend pointing us towards an opportunity we’d never considered.

Someone saying, “I was exactly where you are a few years ago.”

Those moments change careers.

That’s why community has become such an important part of what we do at Conservation Careers.

Today, more than 5,000 conservationists learn together inside our community. They ask questions, share opportunities, celebrate successes, encourage one another after setbacks, and work through expert-led training together.

One of our favourite parts is our regular Pro Chats.

We invite some of the biggest names in conservation to join us for live podcast recordings. Afterwards, our members stay online to ask their own questions, share ideas, and continue the conversation.

Those discussions often become just as valuable as the interview itself.

It’s a powerful reminder that conservation careers don’t develop in isolation.

They develop through connection. Through generosity. Through community.
