The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance seeks a visionary, forward-thinking Executive Director with exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to meeting the urgent challenges faced by primate conservation across Africa.

The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance is the largest network of primate rescue and conservation centers on the continent of Africa working to protect Africa’s primates and halt the illegal trades that endanger them. Twenty-three member sanctuaries in thirteen countries rescue and rehabilitate endangered and threatened primates, protect vast tracts of habitat, and work tirelessly to reduce human threats to these species.

The Alliance provides its members with capacity-building programs and technical, material and financial support.

Responsibilities:

The Executive Director will be an advocate for and representative of sanctuaries in their critical role to primate conservation across Africa. The Executive Director will deliver programs that address critical and long-term sanctuary needs, and source global partnerships to bring intellectual, technical and financial resources to those programs.

As the leader of an alliance of primate sanctuaries throughout Africa, the Executive Director is also responsible for responding quickly to complex crisis situations, for balancing the needs of diverse organizations, and for effective communications in Francohone and Anglophone environments.

The Executive Director will provide the organization with vision and leadership to enable PASA to continuously enhance its ability to support and advance member sanctuaries. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will oversee a $300,000 budget.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Leading the development and implementation of long- and short-term strategic plans and objectives to enhance sanctuaries’ and the organization’s performance in the rescue, welfare and conservation of Africa’s primates.
  • Anticipating changes in the conservation landscape and developing strategies to address them.
  • Leading fundraising efforts including the cultivation of individual donors, foundations and other contributors and overseeing of gift and grant stewardship.
  • Ensuring sound operational and financial management. Developing organization plans, budgets and financial controls and ensuring appropriate communication to the Board of Directors.
  • Ensuring the organization’s compliance with all appropriate PASA, nonprofit and funder policies and regulations.
  • Demonstrating a leadership role of respect and collaboration among members, staff, Board and partners.
  • Advising the Board of Directors, implementing recommended tasks, and providing reports to the Board according to organization policies.

  • Strong experience in a leadership and supervisory position in the nonprofit community.
  • Good understanding of the complex and evolving landscape of primate conservation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an inclusive leadership style that supports and fosters collaboration; a team player and team leader.
  • Proven ability to inspire and secure leadership gifts from donors.
  • Critical thinking skills, integrity, good judgement, strong organizational skills and logical priority-setting skills.
  • Financial literacy, excellent written and oral communications skills, and confidence and skill in public speaking.
  • An undergraduate degree required; an advanced degree preferred.
  • Proficiency in English is required; fluency is highly desirable. Skills and/or strategies to be effective in Francophone environments are required.
  • National and international travel is required, as are irregular hours.

Compensation and location:

  • Salary and benefits will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • Location is flexible within the US.
