Overview

The NERC Arctic Office is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and hosted at British Antarctic Survey (BAS) in Cambridge. It is tasked with supporting and helping to coordinate research and logistical activities in the Arctic by the UK Arctic science community. It incorporates the management of the UK Arctic Research Station at Ny-Ålesund on Svalbard and is closely linked to the NERC Arctic Research Programme.
We seek a new Head of the Arctic Office. The new postholder will be an energetic and proactive individual with the ability to coordinate and enthuse the Arctic scientific community. They will represent UK Arctic science at a high level and to a range of audiences, including senior policy makers, at meetings such as the International Arctic Science Committee and other Arctic fora. The strategic importance of this post was underlined in the recent report from the House of Lords Select Committee on the Arctic.
The post has two primary responsibilities. First, to lead the Arctic Office in activities that will deliver the strategic requirements of a variety of academic and policy stakeholders. Second, the postholder will act as coordinator for the NERC Arctic Research Programme until its completion in 2017, and any future programmes, providing leadership and coordination for scientific projects. The postholder will need to travel extensively and participate in a variety of fora in Europe and beyond. Based in Cambridge, they will have experience of polar science agendas and the ability to support a range of scientific disciplines. They will have strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to network, influence and negotiate.

Qualifications: Science doctorate and post-doctoral research experience or high-level experience in policy work in the polar regions.

Duration: Open Ended Appointment

Salary: Salary will be in the range of £45,271 to £ 49,207 per annum. We offer a generous benefits package including a defined salary pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave.
