Overview

The successful applicant will work as a Round Island Warden with two other Wardens and a team of Conservation Biologists on the island. Staff work on a rotation of one month on the island, living in the field station and two weeks on the mainland, for work purposes and time off. Wardens must be comfortable traveling by small boat in rough seas. The post requires a high level of physical fitness, self-motivation, organisation and people skills, in addition to having a scientific background. Being able to swim and a clean driving license is preferred. Certification in first aid is a requirement and training in wilderness first aid would be an advantage. Experience of working in remote conditions within a small international team is desirable. The role of the Round Island Warden is to support the team with plant propagation, the control/removal of invasive plants and restoration of the island’s plant community. The role will also involve monitoring and handling of reptiles and seabirds, maintaining infrastructure, organising changeovers, ensuring biosecurity measures are maintained and leading other staff, interns and students that visit the island.

Qualifications / requirements:

  • Be above 25 years old
  • A degree in Biology or related subjects
  • Experience in horticulture, flora conservation and restoration preferred and additional fauna conservation, restoration and research will be an advantage
  • Be physically fit for working in tough remote conditions and able to stay focused on repetitive work • Be ready to adapt to unforeseen circumstances with initiative and due care
  • Have good written and spoken English
  • Have a sound knowledge of spreadsheet applications and data management
  • Preferably have a driving license for car and/or motorbike
  • Be a good swimmer and have a first aid certification

The main responsibilities of the post are:

1. Planning, monitoring, supervising and carrying out native plant propagation in the nursery and the planting on the island

2. The monitoring and implementation of all flora and fauna work (day time and night time surveys, invasive plant detection and removal, reptile and seabird handling, pit tagging snakes, ringing of seabirds)

3. Coordinating and participating in the day to day work on the island and the execution of work plans while adhering to protocols

4. The collection and entry of data, maintaining datasets and transferal of data for reporting

5. The training and supervision of support staff, interns and volunteers

6. The maintenance of the field sites, infrastructure and equipment on the island including the safeguarding of all assets

7. The preparation and submission of monthly and yearly reports on all activities carried out

8. Facilitating student and research projects

9. Maintaining a good working relationship with all stakeholders (government, national and international partners)

Work on the mainland includes:

1. Planning subsequent trips to Round Island

2. Organising the logistics, acquisition and purchases of all materials and supplies required for the project

3. Attending relevant meetings

4. Supporting other island restoration work upon request

5. Data management, analyses, reporting and the preparation of other related documents
