Overview

A new start-up company working in the field of large landscape restoration and rewilding is looking for an ambitious, dynamic and suitably experienced person to head up their “Rewilding and Conservation” team. They will join a small starter team to build an innovative large-scale landscape rewilding business working collaboratively with a range of land-owners, land managers and NGO’s.

Person specification

The Head of Rewilding will have:

  • A relevant ecology-based qualification(s), accompanied by significant experience in field-based studies including expertise in nature-based restoration/rewilding
  • Proven ability to recruit and manage diverse teams in the field.
  • Sound working knowledge of Natural Capital services and nature-based tourism
  • Excellent communication skills.

Key responsibilities

In conjunction with the staff team and Board, the Head of Rewilding will:

  • Assess and analyse proposed landscapes for rewilding and restoration potential.
  • Lead the development of an Ecosystem Management Plan for landholding under management across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop and ensure timely implementation of annual nature conservation and restoration action schedules
  • Commission baseline conservation management and biodiversity research, surveys and other scientific work as required to inform biodiversity impact over spatial and temporal series’
  • Deliver effective monitoring and surveillance of medium and long term ecological change using a set of Ecosystem Health Indicators to track progress towards a landscape-scale restoration vision
  • Lead Natural Capital funding applications for conservation and restoration work identified in the Ecosystem Management Plan.
  • Be proficient in the use of GIS and associated data manipulation and visualisation techniques
  • Regularly liaise with key stakeholders such as relevant government agencies, NGOs, the local nature management group, media and neighbouring estates.

Reporting to the Board, this full-time job will be based in the South West, but will involve travel and operations across the UK. A blend of home-based and office work is possible. The post attracts pay, pension and incentives, commensurate with the position on offer.
