‘Graduate Ecologist’ / ‘Assistant Ecologist’

Fantastic career opportunity working with highly respected consultant ecologists

Bioscan UK Ltd are looking for graduate/post-graduate level staff to train up as fieldwork assistants, operating from our rural offices near Oxford. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience with a broad range of species and habitats in diverse locations throughout the UK, and a rare chance to develop your professional ecological career within a highly respected, small and friendly practice known for punching above its weight. As well as a starting salary in the range of £23-25k pro-rata (dependant on experience), we offer flexible working conditions (including time off in lieu), a training budget, access to generous healthcare and pension provision, and performance-related bonuses. Demonstrable skills in one or more aspects of species identification are advantageous but the aptitude and thirst to learn quickly are just as important.

Successful candidates would normally be expected to have the following at minimum:

A degree in ecology or relevant subject
Good written English and IT skills
An enthusiasm to learn and keen interest in wildlife
Good interpersonal skills and ability to work within a small, close knit team
Willingness to travel and work away from home
Professional, well-organised attitude
Full driving licence

The following additional abilities would be desirable but not essential:

Past experience working as a field assistant or similar in the public, private or charitable sectors
Ornithological skills
Experience of undertaking bat transect surveys and identification of bats from sonograms
Identification of common reptile species in the field
Protected species’ survey licenses
Familiarity with the Phase 1 habitat survey technique
Experience in collation of survey data and preparation of reports
CSCS accreditation or willingness to attend the appropriate courses to achieve this

The nature of the work means that a flexible approach to working hours will be needed as evening and early morning survey work will be required. When not undertaking field work, time at our offices will be spent helping with day-to-day tasks such as analysis of bat survey recordings, desk surveys, data analysis, report writing and production of graphics.
