About the role

We are seeking a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Lead to play a key role in supporting our team, partners and communities in East Africa to use monitoring and evaluation tools that support learning and adaptive management.  The Blue Ventures Monitoring and Evaluation team is focused on providing guidance, training and support across key areas of monitoring, and evaluation including; the development of project theories of change, monitoring plans, the selection of monitoring and evaluation methods, data capture tools and data visualisation and interpretation.

The successful candidate will be a motivated, proactive and highly organised individual, with an excellent knowledge of the small-scale fisheries, marine conservation and rural development sectors.

We are looking for an individual who is open to new ideas and embraces innovation, who can demonstrate experience of building effective working partnerships for conservation and/or development.  You will demonstrate a proven track record of project design and management, ideally with experience of community-based conservation and development initiatives in East Africa.

Responsibilities

Develop and implement Monitoring & Evaluation systems

  • Work with the Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) team to develop and implement monitoring & evaluation plans for our work in East Africa
  • Liaise and collaborate with UK and rest of world M&E teams to ensure alignment with the organisation in the use of indicators in East Africa
  • Work with Partner Support Technicians, partners and the central “Learning” team to develop and adapt tools for monitoring and evaluation

Build and maintain data systems and processes

  • Work with the UK-based Data Officer to ensure that central data are kept up to date by coordinating with colleagues in East Africa
  • Ensure data is available internally, and contribute to external reporting and data communications
    Carry out coding and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, with support from the central M&E team when needed

Training and support to colleagues and partners

  • Champion M&E in the wider East Africa team, providing guidance and support, and sharing updates and lessons learned as necessary across East Africa
  • Work with partner organisations and colleagues to assess M&E capacity needs and develop M&E training plans
  • Work closely with PSTs and partners to develop and strengthen community-led monitoring methods as well as data capture tools, management processes and visualisation to support community-led monitoring

Facilitate analysis, evaluation and learning

  • Develop and maintain key visual outputs (dashboards, maps) and conduct/coordinate priority analyses for reporting
  • Ensure all staff have access to site and programme dashboards, and online data sets as needed, providing training and support to team members if necessary for interpretation

Skills and experience 

Required:

  • Existing eligibility to work in East Africa (Tanzania, Mozambique, Comoros or Kenya)
  • Graduate-level qualification (Masters or equivalent) in related field such as Conservation and/or Development
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Experience of developing monitoring methods including a demonstrable understanding of sampling design, and the development and implementation of data capture tools
  • Experience in developing or managing community-led monitoring programmes AND/OR working within community-based conservation
  • Knowledge of research design, as well as data management, analysis and reporting, including the ability to analyse and interpret large datasets
  • High level of competency in excel
  • Ability to take initiative and problem-solve quickly
  • Ability to work well as part of a multicultural team (the role will involve working closely with our global team and colleagues in East Africa) to communicate results to varied audiences clearly and effectively
  • Willingness to conduct extended missions in relatively remote environments
