Bycatch of non-target species is a major threat for the conservation of marine vertebrates. The Canary Current supports large fishing fleets, as well as important foraging grounds for several species of sea turtles and marine birds. Little is known about the bycatch rates of those species in the Canary Current and nothing is known about the demographic consequences of such bycatch, although loggerhead turtles nesting at Cape Verde experience high levels of mortality.
