Overview

ACKGROUND: This is an emergency call for volunteers to travel immediately to Cyprus to work as volunteers during the last month of the sea turtle hatching season. Volunteers will be hosted at bases in Alagadi and Akdeniz villages on the north and west coasts of the island. Their roles will be to patrol beaches and excavate sea turtle nests taking detailed data on nest contents and fate, handle and release sea turtle hatchlings.
The project, which is a collaboration between the Society for Protection of Turtles (www.cyprusturtles.org), the TRNC Department for Environmental Protection, and the University of Exeter, and which is in its 29th year, is concerned about a major oil spill in the region and potential implications for sea turtles and so is calling for extra hands to travel to Cyprus last minute.
COSTS: Flights (to Larnaca airport) and travel insurance will be covered by the volunteers themselves plus a £75 per week subsistence contribution. Flights to Cyprus are currently well priced. (e.g. from UK for example see Jet2, Whizz Air, EasyJet etc).
PLACEMENT DURATION: minimum 14 days
RESTRICTIONS: ALL APPLICANTS WILL NEED TO HAVE BEEN DOUBLE VACCINATED AT LEAST 14 DAYS BEFORE THEIR FLIGHT. A STATEMENT FROM A MEDICAL PRACTITIONER THAT YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY HAD AND RECOVERED FROM C19 IS EQUALLY VALID.
WHAT IS PROVIDED: All food and accommodation is covered by the project. The cost of any C19 testing in Cyprus or in UK prior to, or on return (Cyprus is on the Orange list in UK and so no self-isolation is required for double vaccinated individuals, but a day two PCR test must be booked prior to return) will be covered by the project. Airport transfers will be covered by the project.
