The Flow Country is the largest expanse of blanket bog in Europe. It includes high quality bog habitat and associated pools, lochans and lochs. Bog vegetation, dominated by plants like Sphagnum mosses and cottongrass, protects peat soils up to several metres deep, which hold the remains of plants from 1000s of years ago. The area is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including waders such as greenshank and dunlin and water fowl including scoters and divers, and is a very important carbon store, with more carbon being locked up in the Flow Country than in all the UK's forests put together.
