Hovenweep protects seven ancestral Pueblo villages spread over a twenty-mile expanse of mesa tops and canyons along the Utah-Colorado border. The monument contains not only extraordinary examples of ancient architecture, but the landscapes in which they have existed for over 700 years. An intact remnant of the Great Sage Plain ecosystem that once covered the high desert region of the Four Corners is found within the park boundaries.
