The University of Exeter  (September 2016 – September 2017)

MSc Conservation and Biodiversity

  • Relevant modules included Marine and Conservation Biodiversity, Ecological Census, Statistical Modelling using R, and Key Skills involving grant, risk assessment, and report writing practice.
  • Field course to Kenya to learn about local and national conservation efforts, human-wildlife conflicts, and special biodiversity.
  • Conducted MSc research project, which looked at using environmental DNA as a survey and conservation tool for British seahorses. This involved research, networking, and sample collection, as well as lab skills such as primer design, DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis. Currently working on publication.
  • Presented this research in the form of a poster at the Marine Biological Association’s postgraduate conference.
  • Conducted an internship in Dr. Lena Wilfert’s lab looking at the ecology and evolution of host-parasite interactions in insect pollinators. Responsible for DNA extractions to prepare samples for PCR.
  • Attended the Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Southwest Bottlenose Dolphin Forum, the Cornwall Bird Conference, as well as EcoSoc activities such as small mammal trapping.
  • Involved in community outreach at the Royal Cornwall Show and Science in the Square.

The University of Manchester  (September 2012 – July 2015)

BSc (Hons) Zoology. Result: Upper Second Class

  • Relevant modules included Conservation Biology, Living with Climate Change, and Urban Biodiversity & Conservation.
  • Conducted a final year research project to create an e-learning resource and assess its effectiveness, achieving an overall first class mark.
  • Conducted a research project to assess the impact of human activity on fish community composition in the Amazon during a field course in Ecuador, achieving an overall first class mark (71%).
  • Achieved a first class grade for a dissertation based on the development of legislation surrounding flora and fauna in Antarctica.
  • Worked alone and in groups to develop lab skills.

Work Experience

Seaquest Southwest Volunteer (November 2016 – September 2017)

  • Conducted land-based surveys of cetaceans and seals at coastal sites around Cornwall for the Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Seaquest Southwest Project.

Coral Cay Conservation Volunteer (March – May 2016)

  • Lived and worked with a small team in a remote part of the Philippines.
  • Collected scuba survey data of substrates, fish, and invertebrates to help inform local marine protected area designation.
  • Assisted with community days to educate adults and children about the importance of conserving the marine environment and, in particular, coral reefs.

The Wine Circle (October 2015 – March 2016)

  • Worked as a waitress/bar tender in a local restaurant.
  • Responsible for serving customers and helping make sure everything ran smoothly.

Billz Equestrian (August 2008 – August 2014)

  • Worked with a small team of staff to conduct daily yard duties in all weathers (mucking out, fetching in, feeding, etc.).
  • Ensured health and safety of both horses and people on the yard.
  • Helped clients prepare for lessons.
  • Helped train new staff members and helpers.

 

Positions of Responsibility

Developmental Officer, University of Manchester Volleyball Club (2013 – 2015)

  • Regularly attended committee meetings and helped with the running of the club.
  • Responsible for writing the club’s performance report for each semester which went to the Athletics Union and determined funding.

 

Awards and Achievements

  • FXU V Team Bronze Award for 25 hours volunteering in the community (2017).
  • Captained the varsity volleyball team during my senior year at Egham.
  • Achieved Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
  • Selected to represent ACS Egham twice for Project Kenya, involving both fundraising and volunteering before going out to rebuild a school in Nanyuki (2009 and 2010).
  • Attended the Global Young Leaders Conference in summer 2011.

Marine Mammal Medic: Qualified marine mammal medic with the British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

PADI Certified: Certified Advanced Open Water scuba diver (96 dives).

Reef Check: Certified Reef Check EcoDiver in the Indo-Pacific Region.

First Aid: Qualified first aider in ECP Explorer Medicine and Level 3 Outdoor first aid.

Driving: Full clean driving license.

Languages: Elementary level French (IB), beginner Danish.

IT and Data Handling: Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, SPSS, R, MARK, and QGIS.

Interests and Activities

Wildlife

  • Have an interest and passion for wildlife, especially the coastal environment, coral reefs, impacts of climate change, and designation of MPAs.
  • Keen photographer and shortlisted for this year’s Wild Film Fest student photography competition.

Sport

  • Have been horse riding from a young age, both competing and riding for fun
  • Played volleyball for both the University of Manchester and Manchester Marvels in the National Volleyball League.
  • Enjoy being active, especially hiking and diving.

Travelling

  • Growing up abroad in North Carolina, USA (8 years) and Denmark (3 years) has made me appreciate different environments, nationalities, and cultures, and has sparked a love of travelling.
