Work Experience

A Rocha Portugal (EVS Volunteer) – 01/10/2015 to present
Long term volunteer at an environmental conservation centre, performing a range of duties as well as undertaking an individual research project on horticulture and food production.

  • Designing and producing a project through practical gardening, creating a how to guide for organic gardening in a semi-arid climate.
  • Undertaking bird nest and water quality surveys around the estuary.
  • Managing the small woodlands around the centre, ensuring it remains a suitable habitat for the bird and insect species of the region.
  • Helping to welcome and give tours to visitors and investors to the centre.
  • Proof-reading and editing all material that is produced in English (Newsletters, reports etc.)

The Conservation Volunteers (Health for Life Project Officer) – 06/08/2014 to 28/09/2015

Project officer for the Health for Life in the Community project. Delivering food growing spaces and conservation activities across the West Midlands.

  • Securing, designing and building food growing spaces of various sizes for volunteers fall ages and abilities.
  • Delivering conservation activities for volunteers including; trail building, coppicing, wildlife surveying, invasive species clearing and habitat building.
  • Developing volunteer groups at food growing spaces which involved; recruiting volunteers, providing weekly food growing sessions and creating a sense of community and fun around each space.
  • Creating partnerships with the City Council Ranger Service, Food waste charities, and big businesses to forward different projects.

Aston University (Events & Office Assistant) – 03/04/2014 to 12/06/2014

Short-term position to be part of a small team that delivered a business mentoring event at Aston University. I worked with sponsors, students and lecturers to create an end of year awards ceremony that acted as a celebration and networking opportunity for all involved.

Birmingham Friends of the Earth (Campaign Support Worker) – 02/08/2012 to 30/09/2012

Short term contract to co-ordinate a locally large environmental campaigning organisation. As the only full time member of staff, I was the face of the organisation for media interviews and enquiries. I also helped to organise a comedy night that turned out to be the charities most successful ever fundraiser. Over £2000 was raised for the creation of bee-friendly gardens and over 300 people attended.

Volunteer work

Birmingham Friends of the Earth – (Lead Campaigner) – 30/09/2012 to 30/09/2015

For three years I co-ordinated the Energy and Climate Change campaigns at a campaigning organisation. This included designing campaign timelines, local media interaction and managing a team of volunteers which created several successful campaigns as well as engaging at events.

Digbeth Community Garden (Founder & Co-ordinator) – 01/06/2013 to 30/09/2015

I set-up, designed, built and co-ordinated a community garden in an abandoned industrial lot in Birmingham city centre. That regularly hosts different events from harvest festivals to music and other art events. The Garden also provides food growing space for the local community and a nearby cafe. We also have a partnership with The Real Junkfood Project who regularly cook at our events.

Artifex Balear (Project Management Intern) – 29/08/2013 to 22/12/2013

Four month internship in an NGO on the island of Majorca. As part of a six person team we delivered six projects across the island. These were all in order to promote sustainable living and included; an outdoor education building, several cob-ovens, a portable solar powered water pump, a bamboo framed greenhouse, a permaculture garden, a Cinva-ram and a hydraulic heliostat.
