Overview

Travel to the picturesque Drava Region, one of the wildest natural jewels of Central Europe! The area offers a wide variety of habitats and ecosystems which are in need of everyday conservation work. Visit and protect the ecosystems of swift-flowing rivers, surrounding floodplain forests and fabulous oxbow lakes, the beautiful marshes and eye-catching alder moors, the neighbouring Croatian areas and the famous sand dunes in Somogy County.

You can take part and work on a variety of conservation programs: several habitat preservation and restoration projects, botanical and zoological surveys are in process to be able to preserve the ecosystems’ integrity and operability. The area is home to numerous rare and valuable animal species such as endemic invertebrates, the black variety of common European viper; the black stork, the white-tailed eagle and the bee-eater; or the common zingel. Typical plant species are the Early Spider orchid, and the Autumn Lady’s tresses; or the purple marshlocks.

Work 4-5 hours a day in nature & wildlife conservation, habitat restoration or wildlife surveying, the rest of your time get to know the area’s culture, traditions and landscape!

About Drava Federation

The Drava Federation was established in 2003 through the cooperation of three non-governmental organizations with the purpose of addressing nature conservation in the Drava Basin. Since then, the number of members, and scope of the federation’s activities, including collaboration with different social sectors, as well as private enterprises, has increased significantly. Although the Drava touches the borders of several countries, creating countless unique natural environments, prior to the establishment of the Drava Federation, there was no single cross border conservation entity dedicated to preserving this diverse area of invaluable natural resources. Our main goal among others is the long-term conservation of the Drava Basin’s natural environment, including ecological stability and sustainability of the environment.
