Overview

The Research & Database Manager develops and evaluates ecological and social research and monitoring related to the natural resources of the Park District as affected by global and local influences, including climate change, stormwater, wildlife, invasive species, pests, public use, and management actions. This position provides experimental design, statistical analysis, and database management support to Natural Resources Division staff and explores innovative techniques and approaches to accomplishing research and monitoring goals.

Essential Functions:

  • Regular and predictable attendance is expected and required. All Cleveland Metroparks employees must be prepared to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as required.
  • Serves as staff expert for statistical analysis and interpretation by collaborating with staff and cooperators on analysis of research data to ensure maximum benefit and utilization. Provides database management for research and monitoring projects including quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC).
  • Develops and coordinates innovative research with universities, colleges, local school districts, community science programs, and other regional conservation agencies.
  • Works collaboratively with staff and partners, including volunteers, to study natural resources and impacts to them within the Park District and northeast Ohio.
  • Works as a member or lead of a team to generate findings that have impact on important natural resource management questions or decisions, including writing proposals and study plans, coordinating progress with collaborators, effectively communicating with clients and stakeholders, supervising staff, managing budgets, and making sound decisions.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of essential issues and makes recommendations concerning resource management and park management practices to improve the ability of the park district to accomplish the mission of Conservation, Education and Recreation based on:
    • Results of monitoring and research conducted by and/or for Cleveland Metroparks
    • Review and evaluation of existing research on relevant topics and issues in ecology, resource management, park management, and other related areas.
  • Effectively and professionally communicates (verbally and in writing) the results of monitoring and research through:
    • Appropriate professional and internal presentations and publications (technical reports and peer-reviewed)
    • Staff training, leadership, and technical direction
    • Informational and educational programs for the general public and special groups

Requirements

  • Master’s degree, Ph.D. preferred, from an accredited college/university in Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Ecology, Forestry, Wildlife Management, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Three years of practical experience working in natural resources-related scientific field research; appropriate education and experience may substitute.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license under the laws of the State of Ohio.
  • Experience with large datasets with demonstrated proficiency in statistical analysis with preferred use of R.
  • Relational database management experience using PostgreSQL with GIS extensions.
  • Proficient using spatial data in QGIS and/or other GIS software and GPS hardware.
  • Experience using machine learning models to classify wildlife data (ex: camera images, audio files) desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to read maps and navigate forest or wetland areas.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and the general public.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely, and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings.
  • Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
  • Management skills and strong business acumen, including problem solving, vision, ability to manage multiple programs and meet deadlines, collaboration, leadership, decision making and ability to analyze diverse facts and develop clear and concise reports and recommendations.
