Position Overview

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to help develop right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) distribution models for the coastal Gulf of Maine, with the goal of helping to address management and policy issues. They will work in collaboration with the Maine Department of Marine Resources, using passive acoustic and other sightings data in combination with measured and modeled environmental covariates to build computational / species distribution models. There will be opportunities for the postdoctoral scientist to develop, lead, and co-author manuscripts for publication in the primary research literature as well as to present results at scientific and management meetings.

Screening of candidates will begin August 1st with the expectation that the candidate will be available to start as soon as possible. The salary range for this position is $52,000 – $58,000, with a generous benefits package including health care, retirement contribution, and paid time off. This position is funded for two years.

Requirements

  • PhD in biological oceanography, ecological modeling, computational environmental science or similar
  • Experience in species distribution modeling, or other closely related modeling
  • Strong quantitative and programming skills (R preferred, but not required)
  • Experience working with large, diverse datasets and/or geospatial model output
  • Ability to design, document, and execute computational workflows for data manipulation, analysis and interpretation
  • Track record demonstrating a commitment to publishing research finding
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with significant motivation to publish in the peer-reviewed literature
  • Strong interest in team-based interdisciplinary science and application of science to management questions
