About the Role

As a GVI Field Assistant in Greece you will work on our conservation project protecting endangered loggerhead turtles in collaboration with our Greek partner organisation. Your days will be filled with assisting participants to record nesting activity from the previous night and protect nests from predators,  all while spending your time on the beautiful beaches in Kyparissia bay, Greece!

This is a 3-4 month position, where you’ll assist with leading the turtle conservation efforts as well as volunteer management, all in exchange for your food and accommodation. This position is suitable for someone who is excited about conservation, not afraid to work hard, and looking for the chance to improve your conservation and leadership skills all while having an incredibly unique experience!

What you will do

  • Support the Program Manager and other staff in the running of the program, as well as managing volunteers on a daily basis
  • Lead volunteer activities
  • Assist and actively contribute to project development
  • Act as an enthusiastic role model for volunteers and provide guidance and mentorship
  • Attend staff meetings as an integral member of the team
  • Support base management by ensuring: chore duties are complete, hygiene standards are maintained, GVI’s high health and safety standards are met etc.
  • Adopt a flexible working week including evenings and weekends at times

What you will need

Required

  • Passion for sustainable development
  • People-centric mindset – comfortable with being ‘on’ 24/7
  • Experience managing groups/participants/students
  • Experience volunteering (leading volunteers would be ideal)
  • Experience travelling/living in a foreign country
  • Ability to live in a communal setting
  • Strong physique – able to walk 5 hours in heavy sand while carrying equipment

Advantageous

  • Previous GVI experience
  • Previous turtle experience or knowledge
  • Understanding of coastal conservation
  • Understanding of local culture
  • Manual Driving Licence
  • Emergency First Response certified/trained
