Overview

The Care For Hedland Environmental Association is again gearing up for the 2021/2022 Flatback turtle nesting season and the Association monitors two local Port Hedland beaches – Cemetery Beach & Pretty Pool Beach from late October 2021 – February 2022.

The monitoring is in three components: morning track monitoring, evening monitoring/ eco tours for people watching turtle nesting and a 50-night mark/recapture tagging program.

Any interested volunteers who would like to assist from 25th October 2021 to 4th February 2022 are most welcome. Volunteers are needed and can take part in the program for any length of time from one week to the whole three months.

All volunteers will be responsible for travel, COVID 19 WA entry requirements (and adhere to quarantine requirements for WA) at their own cost. Limited free billeted accommodation is available. You must arrange your own transport to Port Hedland and then, transport to/from the beaches is supplied.

Volunteers get the opportunity to observe Flatback turtles returning to the sea, see hatchlings emerge from nests, assist in turtle rescues, observe the nesting process at night and be hands on and assist in the mark/recapture tagging program.
