Through our extensive logistic capability and know how BAS facilitates access for the British and international science community to the UK polar research operation. Numerous national and international collaborations, combined with an excellent infrastructure help sustain a world leading position for the UK in Antarctic affairs. British Antarctic Survey is a component of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). NERC is part of UK Research and Innovation www.ukri.org

We employ experts from many different professions to carry out our Science as well as keep the keep the lights on, feed the research and support teams and keep everyone safe! Job Purpose

To take a leading role in developing world-leading research on the structure and function of polar ocean ecosystems. The postholder will be expected to make use of a wide range of datasets, and to collaborate with other scientific teams, in order to generate an interdisciplinary understanding of Southern Ocean ecosystems that can drive the international research agenda.

Their work will draw on datasets such as population dynamics of key polar pelagic species, their response to major environmental drivers and predator-prey interactions. The postholder will develop syntheses and models addressing concepts such as variability, distribution and abundance, community composition, trophic linkages, biogeochemical interactions, biodiversity and resilience.

Duties & Responsibilities

As part of the Ecosystems team, the postholder will undertake and work independently on research projects that take a cross-disciplinary perspective on the structure and function of polar ecosystems.

The candidate will perform analyses and construct and/or apply models to develop an ecosystems level understanding of how biological systems operate in the polar ocean environment. This work will draw on data such as that on lifehistories, species distribution, abundance, size structure, taxonomic diversity, trophic interactions and the impacts of environmental change.

They will be expected:

  • To publish important scientific results in internationally leading journals, and to present at national and international conferences.
  • To develop and lead funding proposals with BAS scientists and external partners, that will enhance this and wider areas of research.
  • To work collaboratively within the Ecosystems team on related science projects, and more widely within BAS on cross-disciplinary research challenges.
  • To represent BAS on national and international forums, providing strategic input to develop new science community initiatives.
  • To engage with stakeholders concerning the use of science for influencing policymakers and the wider community.
