Position: Marine Science Officer (Sea-Going)
Hours: 37hrs
Salary: Grade 5 £30,354 (2022/23 rates including 7.5% salary supplement)
Location: Based in Kings Lynn (expected to work across the District)

Eastern IFCA is one of the largest of the 10 Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities, responsible for the coastline of Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Suffolk out to six nautical miles at sea. One of its primary functions is to carry out research and provide scientific advice to inform decision making and management of inshore fisheries.

This position provides an exciting opportunity to be an integral part of the marine science team within a progressive organisation at the forefront of marine management, conservation and enforcement in the UK.

Working as part of a small team, the successful candidate will assist in the development of sustainable inshore fisheries and a protected marine environment within the Authority’s district by providing appropriate expert advice, informed by relevant research and data analysis to produce credible scientific evidence in support of management decisions and actions.

You will be able to problem solve, be organized and able to prioritise your working day. You will be part of the visible face of the Authority and should be capable of promoting the reputation and values of Eastern IFCA

The ideal candidate should be:

  • Educated to degree level, preferably in a marine science or coastal management discipline;
  • Enthusiastic and highly motivated;
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and organisational skills;
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook and statistical packages;
  • Strong numeracy skills;
  • Experience of report writing;
  • Ability to analyse scientific data and reports;
  • An understanding of marine protected areas (MPAs);
  • Experience of MapInfo G.I.S program;
  • Ability to work as part of a small team;
  • Hands on approach to work.

The position is physically demanding so candidates should have a good level of fitness. You will be required to act as crew on the Authority vessels. Training will be provided where necessary to carry out these duties.

The role will involve working some unsocial hours including early morning, late evenings, overnight and some weekends as required. A salary supplement of 7.5% (included in the salary quoted above is payable in recompense for this.

If successful, you will be required to undergo a Baseline Personnel Security Standard check and seafarers medical (ML5/ENG1).
