Overview

This programme’s conservation projects aim at preserving the natural beauty and unique habitats of Seychelles. Become part of this fascinating project and make an active contribution to protecting Seychelles magnificent biodiversity!

Details

Experience the fascinating nature of the Seychelles up close with our volunteer project on Platte Island! As part of a dedicated team, you can monitor endangered species, explore the marine reserve, and work towards restoring ecosystems. Immerse yourself in the colourful underwater world while snorkelling, support the mapping of seagrass and help collect useful data.

In addition to looking after sea turtle nests, your efforts will help conserve vegetation and protect the bird population on the island. Spend at least four weeks on Platte Island and make a lasting impact in protecting this unique ecosystem.

As a volunteer, you will take part in a variety of projects, including collecting data and observing marine life underwater as well as daily beach patrols.

This also includes excavating turtle nests, translocating endangered nests and tagging sea turtles. Your duties will also include caring for juvenile giant tortoises and vegetation rehabilitation.

Also, you will be part of a mission to create a new database of all the island’s creatures using ID kits and contribute to the lexicon of life on Platte Island. During your project you will spend a lot of time in the water, which is ideal due to the low current.

You’ll engage in snorkelling expeditions aimed at monitoring young turtles and their habitat. Equipped with a camera and necessary gear, you’ll actively participate in various surveys, including monitoring juvenile sharks and manta rays.

Accommodation & Meals

On Platte Island, you will share a one-bedroom flat with another participant in the hall of residence. The flat offers a bedroom with two single beds, a shared bathroom, wardrobes, extra storage space, office chairs, tables and a kettle with cups.

The accommodation is air-conditioned, but due to the tropical location, insects such as mosquitoes, cockroaches, beetles, and spiders may occasionally be present.

Enjoy meals together at Café Koko, where three meals a day are provided – a vegetarian or vegan diet is easily catered for, but please let us know if you have any other dietary requirements. You will volunteer six days a week and have one day off. In your free time, you can explore the pristine beaches by swimming, snorkelling, or stand-up paddle boarding. You can also play basketball on the multi-sports court in the staff village and work out in the 24-hour gym. After work, enjoy a drink, read a book, or spend time together with the other volunteers.

About Natucate

Natucate — our name intentionally combines the English words ‘nature’ and (to) ‘educate’, because it is our aim to reconcile nature and education. We offer nature tourism and voluntary service abroad and concentrate on the domains nature conservation, environmental and animal protection. Natucate does not only target school-leavers, students and graduates, who may want to gather valuable experience, but it is also aimed at working people and over 50s, who are looking for a way to broaden their horizons in an unforgettable and at the same time meaningful way.

Our advice and travel service is specialized in the organization of selected projects for voluntary service, but in addition we also work out longer individual tour proposals and if requested arrange them, if they fall within the context of nature/adventure tours.

Not only do the participants gain a lasting impression of nature but they can also immerse themselves in the culture of the host country. Our programme includes education and further education, combined with practical experience and outdoor activities.
